  21. The Joker’s real identity was revealed in Folie à Deux’s ‘brutal ending’ – and it’s not who you think.

Identity confusion is the theme throughout the entire film, as the title suggests, but the ending of the second instalment may leave some
    fans surprised.

Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller from director Todd
Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as clown Arthur
Fleck who has descended into mental illness.

Folie à Deux begins with Arthur behind bars in Arkham Asylum,
waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for the murders he committed two years prior.

In the meantime he is enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

    – and it’s not who you think

Lady Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, a fellow inmate on her way, fans believe, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley
    Quinn.

The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten,
but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’,
    not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance
with a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for
the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.

His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke is accused of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as urgently wants him
to identify as his demonic alter ego.

In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is
    found guilty of first-degree murder.

As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates
outside the court, with two people helping Arthur
escape, but he is later caught by the police and taken back to Arkham.

In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell
Arthur a joke, before stabbing him in the stomach and while he bleeds to death, carves a smile
    into his own face.

It raises questions surrounding the Joker’s true identity, as it
would seem he never went on to become the famed villain, instead he was just the person who inspired the man who eventually became him.

Director Todd, told Entertainment Weekly: ‘When those guards kill that kid in the [hospital] he realises that dressing up in makeup, putting on this thing, it’s not changing anything.

‘In some ways, he’s accepted the fact that he’s always been Arthur Fleck; he’s never
been this thing that’s been put upon him, this idea that Gotham people put on him,
    that he represents.

‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t want to live as a
fake anymore — he wants to be who he is.’

The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit,
    which was simply titled Joker.

The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released in theatres on October 4, following an October 2 international release.

  22. Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of
the Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative
to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or
for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski),
the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a
    fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with
multiple colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of
Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual
wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper
collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

    Kensington Palace

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by
Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple,
and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather
blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last
    year.

A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the
multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little
out of your budget, there are countless options on the high street.
The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our attention, as did the Fair Isle knit that was
featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.

The future husband and wife shared a kiss and cozied up while boarding a water taxi as Gaga flashed her enormous
    diamond engagement ring.

The 38-year-old pop star made a fashion-forward appearance in a ’60s-inspired black mini dress with a white polka dot pattern.

The flirty number featured long, slightly flared sleeves and a similarly flared
    mini skirt.

Gaga obscured her tummy in the hypnotizing ensemble thanks to a conveniently
    placed over her midriff.

The singer and actress, 38, also flashed her enormous diamond engagement ring on the love-up journey with her fiancé

Gaga — born Stefani Germanotta — showed off her
toned legs in shimmery black pantyhose and finished the look with classic pointy-toe black heels.

Gaga enhanced her platinum locks with lengthy extensions and arranged them in a half-up/half-down style with a center part.

A portion of her hair was secured in a small chignon at the midpoint of her head
and the loose strands were set in loose waves.

The superstar entertainer wore a full face of matte makeup, complete with pink lipstick.

The eight-carat, oval-cut diamond solitaire set in platinum set Polansky back a cool $578,000 according to Brides.

In July, the Bad Romance songstress dedicated one of her final Las Vegas residency performances to Polansky,
    calling him ‘my mister.’

The couple was first romantically linked around New Year’s Eve 2019 and later went Instagram official in early 2020.

Polansky is a 2006 graduate of Harvard University and runs Napster founder Sean Parker’s Parker Group.

Throughout their years dating, Gaga and Polansky have attended the Super Bowl, the BAFTAs, and the Critics Choice Awards together.

Wedding plans for the couple are underway and their legal plan is
    being negotiated.

Gaga is reportedly seeking a $900 million prenup
before she walks down the aisle.

And Polansky, who has a $600 million net worth as head of
The Parker Foundation, is on board.

A source close to the couple told In Touch that
‘there are a lot of assets on both sides,
and a prenup will just make everything clear.’

Gaga ‘is worth $900 million, so of course there needs to be a prenup in place,’ the
insider said. ‘And Michael understands that. He’s not resisting it.’

  24. ‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better way to
bring festive cheer than a fridge full of fizz for parties and impromptu gatherings?

Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love both poised, elegant styles with brisk acidity
and the richer, pastry-like, gastronomic pours. But with Christmas
all about sharing, toasting, and big get-togethers, stocking up
    is essential.

Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best Christmas fizz,
outclassing Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial. The supermarket
fizz costs just £25 a bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced
    over £40.

With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep both the palate and the wallet happy.

    Bollinger Champagne, £58

Swap for? Langlois Crémant Brut Réserve NV, £15.95

    Saving: £42.05 a bottle

For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley, where the Bollinger family
crafts this Crémant using the same traditional method as
their Champagnes. Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives in the
Loire, it undergoes 24 months of aging, delivering a Crémant with depth that offers a charming twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style – with
    change to spare.

    Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280

Swap for? Roederer Estate Quartet NV, £32

    Saving: £248 a bottle

Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the name behind the iconic Cristal Champagne – a prized choice among celebrities, especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with sparklers in the ‘VIP section’ of nightclubs.

But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your eyes, try Cristal’s Californian cousin, Quartet.
Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley, it offers a taste of luxury for almost a tenth of the cost.

    Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne, £80

Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé NV,
    £12.50

    Saving: £67.50 a bottle

If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant de Limoux
from Morrisons – delivering luxe for less. With
a delicate effervescence and notes of strawberries and cream, it hints at
pink Champagne at five times the price. And here’s a little-known fact:
legend has it that the art of fizz was first discovered in Limoux, in the South of France – though our friends in Champagne may disagree.

    Ace of Spades Champagne, £315

Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava,
    £12

    Saving:  £303 a bottle

For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods, forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace of Spades’ and head
to Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete with
a shield that’s delightfully close to a spade. For the price of one bottle of
that Champagne, you could bag 26 bottles of this classy cava – and, honestly, after a few glasses,
    who’s noticing the difference?

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, £89

Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta Brut NV, £26.50

    Saving: £62.50 a bottle

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for
bubbles made solely from white grapes – typically Chardonnay
in Champagne, delivering elegance and finesse, à la Ruinart.
Prices have crept up as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage, but hop over the border to
the hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy, and you’ll
find complex, vinous sips with plenty of flair, like this Fortnum’s
    pick.

    Pol Roger Champagne, £55

Swap for? Graham Beck Selection Sparkling Wine, £13.50

    Saving:  £41.50 a bottle

I served these delicious South African bubbles at
my wedding – quaffed in record time, with nobody realising it wasn’t Champagne.
As well as my own big day, Graham Beck has made an appearance
at state events for Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama,
earning it the title of ‘presidential pick’
for sparkling wine. And you’ll save a few
quid compared to other politician favourites, like Pol Roger.

    Mumm Champagne, £39

Swap for? Mumm Marlborough Brut Prestige, £25

    Saving:  £14 a bottle

From Marlborough, New Zealand’s premier region and home of top
Brit sip, Sauvignon Blanc, comes a fresh take on fizz.

Blessed with sunshine and a cool climate, Marlborough produces wines that are vibrant and crisp.

Here, a blend of traditional Champagne varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot
Meunier – offers an easy-drinking, bright character, and a great value sub
    for Mumm’s beloved bubbles.

    Veuve Clicquot Champagne, £48

Swap for? Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV, £14.99

    Saving:  £33.01 a bottle

First launched over a decade ago at £12.99, Aldi has miraculously kept
their best-selling Veuve Monsigny Champagne under £15.

For a sprightly, quaffable style, it’s unbeatable at that
price – perfect for Buck’s Fizz at Christmas Day brunch, canapés,
and a refreshing post-turkey sip. It’s worth mentioning that the
Premier Cru label at £21.99 is a real step up and
    fantastic value too.

    Moët & Chandon Champagne, £44

Swap for? Chandon Brut Argentina, £23

    Saving: £21 a bottle

From Champagne giant Moët & Chandon, Chandon Brut is a
    Champagne-style bubbly from Mendoza, Argentina.
If you’re thinking Mendoza is known for its hot climate and big,
bold Malbec reds, think again – Chandon’s
vineyards are situated in the foothills of the Andes at over 1,
000 metres, where cooling influences help retain that desirable freshness in the grapes.

  25. Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking
stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome
    live on-air.

The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.

Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to listeners that she was about
to get an unsuspecting Tony to read an excerpt that
detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and
    a 19-year-old stripper.

‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met
Phil who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.

‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months into seeing each other.’

Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt that detailed Phil’s living situation with the stripper and another, rather unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.

‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a motel with two weird flatmates.

One was a stoner guy who would sit there blazed out of
his gourd,’ Tony read from Jackie’s book.

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony a little red faced after making him read about her
    first threesome live on air

The book then turned to Jackie’s first ménage à trois.

‘Then there was the stripper they lived with [named] Christie,’ Tony
    read.

‘We went out to a nightclub one night and we came home
and we were having sex and Christie decided she wanted to
    join us.

‘The idea of a threesome had obviously never occurred to me before I had never
even considered it because it didn’t sound like me.’

Tony soldiered on with the revealing passage which revealed that Jackie and Phil’s third
was only interested in one half of the equation.

‘I had no idea what to do – she was this cute 19-year-old
with a dark bob and an amazing body but she was only
    into women,’ Tony continued.

‘Phil was really excited but Christie kept slapping him away.

She did her thing and then left.’

When Kyle asked Jackie to clarify what she meant by ‘did her thing’,
a sheepish Jackie replied: ‘Let’s not talk about this in front of my dad,
    shall we.’

‘I had no idea what to do she was this cute 19 year old with a dark bob and an amazing body but she
was only into women,’ Tony continued. ‘Phil was really excited but Christie kept slapping him away .
She did her thing and then left.’ Jackie id pictured with Phil (r) and
Michael Jackson tribute act Jason Jackson

Despite the raciness of the content he had
just read from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.

‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.

If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
    I’d be so excited.

‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand
    how these things happen.’

Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s
    mother Julie.

‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.

The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her
years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.

During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine
    Forte painkillers a day.

The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux could be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the
supervillain before he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for
a number of reasons. I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film.”‘

The Dark Knight actor died aged 28 after taking a fatal cocktail of drugs, leaving behind his daughter, who was two years old at the time.

Meanwhile Joker: Folie À Deux can now be streamed, just weeks after
    its theatrical release.

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is now available to rent
from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros.
investment into the film, as per Variety.

The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to
lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical
    run’ according to the publication.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed
that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan (pictured

The movie studio spent about $200 million to
produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office
to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any
estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives”
are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is
    reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this
week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing
    and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after
    two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros
Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at
the box office on opening night.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and
‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday,
    October 4.

Joker: Folie À Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga,
can be streamed now, just weeks after its theatrical release; Phoenix and Gaga seen in a still

The movie will be available to rent from home starting October 29,
in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros. investment into the film, according to Variety

in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which
had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film,
while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for
    a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
    a critic score of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase –
with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he
‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the
making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the
film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some
down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million]
worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was
    Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment
    to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to
    his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran –
who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December
    2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut
screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia
and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the
director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost
    around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to
fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining
    static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio
‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.

And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t
listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at
the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a
Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film
    to Venice.

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had
appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

  28. An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you
simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.

There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.

This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there
are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under
    £150, is ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was
taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and
transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers
to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near
empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze
of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps,
indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.

The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the
    shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur
that tastes far better than it ought to.

Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the
    noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.

Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard
with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber
art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar,
gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste
    is never enough.

  29. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled
a slower than anticipated U.S. roll out of its
IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it
aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030,
up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products,
and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across
a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.

states from 2024, but a national launch would only come
after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as
    IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it
    from 2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its
    approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a
    positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch
brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share,
and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA,
    executives said.

PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by Emma Rumney in London and Granth Vanaik in Bengaluru; additional reporting by Ananya Mariam Rajesh

The Joker: Folie à Deux on Wednesday night with three outfit
    changes.

The singer, 38, who plays Harley Quinn in film,
commanded attention as she left the afterparty at Nomad Hotel in Covent Garden in an outlandish face print bodysuit
    and matching stockings.

The pattern had drawings of bleeding faces stitched together and matched Gaga’s perfectly themed eye-shadow look for the psychopathic character in which she portrays.

Gaga had originally arrived to afterparty in a striped minidress after wowing on the red carpet in a
custom scarlet Celine gown – and she made sure her outfit was still a talking point when she left the bash with her fiancé Michael Polansky, 46.

Despite leaving in the early hours, Gaga donned a pair of dark shades and added to her quirky look with ripped tights and baby blue platform
    heels.

  31. Early reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux suggest a
blend of ‘brilliance’ and ‘boredom’, leading to a mixed bag of reviews.

The film sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning portrayal of Arthur Fleck/Joker
and the addition of pop powerhouse Lady Gaga as Joker’s love interest Harley Quinn.

Premiering to a full house at the Venice Film
Festival on Wednesday, the eagerly awaited sequel to Todd Phillips’ billion-dollar hit divided critics.

While some found it ‘superior’ to the acclaimed
2019 film and lauded the performances of both Phoenix
and Gaga, others slammed Joker: Folie à Deux as
    ‘derivative’ and devoid of ‘fun.’

DailyMail’s Brian Viner called the movie musical ‘audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same.’

Owen Gleiberman appeared a bit less impressed in his review for Variety, writing that the ‘cracked jukebox
musical’ had an audacious concept, ‘but in a
basic way it’s an overly cautious sequel.’

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich took a bit of a harsher tone, saying the 138-minute flick is ‘boring,
flat, and a criminal waste of Lady Gaga,’ adding it feels ‘bad on purpose.’

He added: ‘Phillips has created a corporate pop spectacle that all but demands to be seen as something else.

‘Here is a movie that perversely denies audiences everything they’ve been conditioned
to want from it; gently at first, and then later with
the unmistakable hostility of a knife to the gut.

‘And that, more than anything else, is why Folie à Deux adopts the form
of a classic musical: Because no other genre makes it so easy to appreciate all the fun you’re
    not having.’

In contrast, Alex Harrison of ScreenRant describes Joker: Folie à Deux as a more refined sequel designed to provoke
    fans of the original film.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux has more coherent things to say about fan culture than it or its predecessor
does about mental illness, which, for me, makes
it the superior of the two,’ he stated.

Deadline’s Pete Hammond praises the film as ‘brilliant’ and lauds the performances of the leads.

‘Phoenix knows this character inside and out, and in what others might say
is a risky proposition, he tap dances, sings and sells this role like no other — if not topping his Oscar-winning turn in Joker, at least
finding a way to take him in different, wholly surprising direction.

‘Gaga is smartly low-key, not the Harley Quinn we associate with
Margot Robbie, but her own person, dressed down and believably showing affection and
connection with Joker and, more important, the man behind
    the makeup.’

The Hollywood Reporter says Joker: Folie à Deux feels ‘narratively a
little thin and at times dull… This sequel is built on more of a conceit than a solid story
    foundation.’

‘Even more than its predecessor, Joker: Folie à Deux
reduces the archvillain to a hollowed-out product of childhood trauma and
mental illness. Which means there’s little we didn’t learn last time,’ added the outlet’s David Rooney.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw wrote, ‘There’s a great supporting cast and a barnstorming first act but Todd Phillips’s much-hyped Gotham sequel proves claustrophobic and repetitive.’

    leads

The Times called it a ‘messy, lifeless sequel’ that ‘didn’t need to exist.’

‘The director Todd Phillips said there would be no follow-up
to the original, but he changed his mind and the result is a derivative musical,’ the outlet’s Kevin Maher wrote.

Allison Willmore at Vulture panned the movie, writing, ‘Mostly, Arthur is acted upon, even when he thinks he’s seizing control — a punching bag for the world and, more importantly, for the director,
who subjects the character to so many indignities that he actually stops being pitiable and starts resembling the punchline to a very long, shaggy joke.

‘By the end of Joker: Folie à Deux, that joke feels like it’s on us.’

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its
cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie
cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical
element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga
    joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100%

a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how

Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from
the furore over the film, insiders claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as
Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix,
49, as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the
wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked
that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,
    ‘ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at
other projects they can roll out as they want to move
on this from as quickly as possible.’

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is not letting it deter her from
returning to the big screen, with the singer said to be
eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a success
    and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final film.

Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants to audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented, it is a bucket list
moment for her to be involved.’
